Hedwig (Hattie) Emma Geissler
F, b. 26 October 1881, d. 22 September 1966
| Birth | 26 Oct 1881 | Hedwig (Hattie) Emma Geissler, daughter of Hermann Eduard Geissler and Emma Louisa Graumüller, was born on 26 Oct 1881 at Germany.1 |
| Note | | Hattie's identification as a daughter of Hermann and Emma Geissler comes from many sources. First, she first came to America in 1899 in the company of Auguste Graumüller Schreiner, sister of Emma Geissler. Second, her husband Paul Knop was named as a "brother" on the ship records of Hugo and Marie Geissler's emigration in 1925. Third, she was named as an aunt in Hugo H. Geissler's naturalization papers in 1941-42. Fourth, she was named as a sister to Hugo Ernst Geissler in his German newspaper death notice in 1945, as a sister to Martha Geissler Benschura in her obituary in 1949 and as a niece in the obituary of Anna Zons in 1954. Finally, her own death certificate lists "Herman Geisler" of Germany as her father and "Emma Graumiller" of Germany as her mother. |
| Note | 5 Oct 1899 | Hattie (Hedwig) left Hamburg with her aunt, Auguste Graumüller Schreiner, on the Furst Bismarck, bound for New York. It is unclear whether she had been to America before; the Hamburg Passenger Lists (Staatsarchiv Hamburg. Hamburg Passenger Lists, 1850-1934 [database on-line]) show her as a resident of Chicago and some nine or so years older than she was. |

| Birth | 24 Jan 1742/43 | Arthur Buchanan, son of James Buchanan and Isabella Wilson, was born on 24 Jan 1742/43 at prob MD.1,2 |
| Marriage | 24 Jan 1762 | Arthur Buchanan married Mary Boswell, daughter of William? Boswell and Ann Wilson, on 24 Jan 1762 at prob MD. James Buchanan
M, b. circa 1700, d. before 8 June 1751
| Note | | The identities of James and Isabella Buchanan of Charles County, MD, as the parents of Arthur Buchanan, and the descent from there on to the Buchanans of North Carolina is not yet thoroughly documented. The best source of information, according to long-time family researchers, is a family Bible once owned by the Sparks family of Estatoe, North Carolina. There are a number of transcriptions of the contents but the most recent and most reliable was created by David Stamey, a high school teacher from Waynesville, NC, who was allowed by the Sparks family to see the Bible in 1993. One of the reasons to accept the evidence of the Bible is its agreement with certain information set out in the settlement of the estate of James Buchanan, who died in Charles County MD in 1751. His wife, Isabella, was the administratrix of the estate, and listed their then-minor children at the time the estate was settled in August 1752 as 'James 18 Years as of June last, George 15 Years September last, Sarah 12 Years June last, Arthur 10 January next, Benedicta 4 September next, and Joseph Buchannan 1 year Old April last.' This agrees with the Bible's listing of a January 24, 1743 date of birth for Arthur Buchanan. And the place of birth for Arthur's son William is shown on the 1850 census as having been MD. In short, the known extrinsic evidence supports the contents of the transcription of the Bible. In the absence of any better or contradictory evidence, the Stamey transcription will be relied on at least for the time being as evidence of the link between the Charles County MD Buchanans and the North Carolina Buchanans. |
| Note | | The Buchanan name comes from Scotland and the origin of the clan is traced to Anselan o' Kyan, son of a King of Ulster, who landed in Argyll about the year 1016. For his services against the Danes, so it is said, he received from King Malcolm II the lands of Buchanan, lying to the east of Loch Lomond. The lands remained in the possession of the family for nearly seven centuries, until the death of John, 22nd laird of Buchanan, in 1682. The crest badge is a dexter hand couped at the wrist, holding up a chapeau tasseled with a rose gules, all within a laurel wreath, proper. The clan motto: Clarior hinc honos (Brighter hence the honour).
DNA tests concluded in 2006 strongly tie our Buchanan line to the "chiefly" Buchanans. DNA testing shows a match of 37/37 between a documented descendant of James Buchanan (through his son Arthur and Arthur's son William) and New Zealand Buchanans who have a good paper trail from the Chiefly Buchanans of Gartincaber and Drumikill in Stirlingshire, Scotland, through a younger son of the 12th Buchanan Laird. There is also a 37/37 match with what has been termed the Scots Modal (the results of comparisons among a compiled database of persons with known Scots ancestry). |
| Birth | c 1700 | James Buchanan was born c 1700. The birthdate is pure extrapolation -- reached by estimating the dates of birth of the oldest children, calculating backwards to the likely marriage date, and calculating backwards to the likely birthdate given colonial marriage patterns.1 |
| Marriage | b 1726 | He married Isabella Wilson, daughter of Alexander Wilson and Mary [--M?--] Wilson, b 1726 at prob Charles County, MD. Isabella listed an 18-year-old son as the oldest surviving child in settling James' estate in 1752. This puts the date of their marriage at least as far back as 1733. From estate documents of Isabella's father, Alexander Wilson, it appears that there were two older children (Mary and William), each old enough to be identified by name and given adult-oriented legacies in Alexander's will in 1746. That puts the date of marriage at or before 1726.2,1 |
| Death | b 8 Jun 1751 | James Buchanan died b 8 Jun 1751 at Charles County, MD. Maryland state records contain the final accounting of James Buchanan's estate and speak in terms of an inventory entered into the prerogative office as of June 8 1751 (thus placing the date of death before that). The securities for the final account were William Boswell, John Oakley and Joseph King.3 |

| Note | 5 Sep 1751 | Isabella served as administrator of the estate of James and Mary Gaines, filing the inventory of their estate on September 5, 1751 in Prince Georges County MD. Mary is assumed to be a daughter of Isabella and James Buchanan. James Buchanan (the younger) and William Boswell are both shown on the estate documents as well as on the estate documents of James Buchanan (the elder) in 1752.3 |
| Note | 16 Aug 1752 | Isabella was the administrator of the estate of her husband James, filing the final accounting of his estate in the Maryland Prerogative County, Accounts Liber 33, folio 141. The account lists their then-surviving children as James, 18 years old June last (b. June 1734), George, 15 years old September last (b. September 1736), Sarah, 12 years old June last (b. June 1740), Arthur, 10 years old January next (b. January 1743), Benedicta, 4 September next (b. September 1748), and Joseph, one year old April last (b. April 1751). Note that the accounting was approved by Daniel Jenifer, who later went on to serve as a member of Maryland state senate, 1777-81; a delegate to the Continental Congress from Maryland, 1778-82; and a member of the U.S. Constitutional Convention, 1787.4 |
