| Birth | 24 Dec 1879 | Martha Elisa (Elisabeth) Graumüller, daughter of Henrietta Louise Graumüller, was born on 24 Dec 1879 at Bad Köstritz, Germany. The church records simply stated "unbekannt" (unknown) in the space for identifying the father of the child, who was born at 9:30 p.m. An alternate date of birth of 1885 listed by her husband on a passport application in 1922 is clearly in error. Note that Elisabeth's social security application identified her father as Auguste Graumüller and her mother as a Zimmerman. Those were her grandparents, probably named as her parents to avoid having to disclose that she could not identify her father.1,2,3 |
| Baptism | 18 Jan 1880 | Martha Elisa (Elisabeth) Graumüller was baptized on 18 Jan 1880 at Bad Köstritz, Germany. The church records identified her godparents as her aunts Ida Graumüller Franke and Auguste Graumüller, both of Gera, and her uncle Ernst Graumüller of Bad Köstritz. The baptismal record also has a note ("lebt in Chicago") clearly handwritten at another time.1 |
| Immigration | 23 Aug 1907 | She arrived in the United States on 23 Aug 1907 landing at Ellis Island, New York City, New York County, NY.Elisabeth, accompanied by her aunt Anna Graumüller Nitschke, arrived in New York on board the Pretoria from Hamburg. The two had left Hamburg on 10 Aug 1907 (see the Hamburg emigration records). She appears in the Ellis Island arrival records as Elisabeth Draumuller. The ship manifest of the Pretoria shows, at line 14: Graumiller, Elisabeth, (handwritten notation: niece), age 27, female, single, no occup listed, read and write yes, native of Germany, German, born Kostritz, Germany, destination Illinois (Chicago), no ticket to ultimate destination, paid for own ticket, no cash ($50 crossed out), not in US before, going to join relative Frk. Schreiner, 4839 Bishop Str., Chicago, no to Q19-22, health good, no deformities or diseases, 5 ft. 6" tall, fair, blond hair, blue eyes, no identifying marks, born in Kostritz. Ship information on the Pretoria states that the ship was built for the Hamburg-American Line by Blohm & Voss Shipbuilders, Hamburg, Germany, 1898, and sailed under the German flag. 12,800 gross tons; 586 (bp) feet long; 62 feet wide. Steam quadruple expansion engines, twin screw. Service speed 13 knots. 2,579 passengers (197 first class, 2,382 third class, according to the Ellis Island website, although the Hamburg records say Anna and Elisabeth traveled second class). Straight stem, one funnel and four masts. Hamburg-New York service. Laid up in Germany throughout World War I, 1914-18. Used as a USA transport in 1919. Scrapped in 1921.4 |
| 1910 Census | 29 Apr 1910 | She appeared on the 1910 census of Chicago, Cook County, IL, at 4839 Bishop St., enumerated 29 Apr 1910 in the household of Frank Schreiner and Auguste Graumüller Schreiner, her aunt and uncle. Living with them was another aunt, Anna Graumuller Nitschke. Elisabeth was shown as 25, single and working as a washerwoman.5 |

| Note | 16 Aug 1922 | She was married to Herman in 1922 when the two of them came back to the US on the Wuerttenberg , arriving from Hamburg on August 16, 1922. They traveled on US passport #123971, issued Washington DC March 6, 1922, and lived at 5617 W 64th Pl, Chicago.7,8 |
| Note | 1930 | Elisabeth Graumüller Marks was one of two persons who vouched for Hugo Ernst Geissler and Marie Margarethe Nuckel Geissler when they sought to be naturalized as American citizens in 1930. Her aunt Anna Graumüller Zons was the other person.9 |
| Death | 14 Feb 1970 | Elisabeth Graumüller Marks died on 14 Feb 1970 at Chicago, Cook County, IL, at age 90. Her obituary in the Feb 15-16, 1970 Chicago Tribune reads: "Elizabeth Marks, nee Graumiller, beloved wife of Herman Marks; loving mother of Ernest H.
