| Death | 12 Jan 2006 | James Ray Lowe died on 12 Jan 2006 at Austin, Travis County, TX, at age 94. James Ray Lowe, age 94, passed away on January 12, 2006. He was born on March 30, 1911 to Roscoe and Elizabeth Lowe in Rattan, a small farming community in Delta County, Texas. He spent his early years farming on his dad's cotton farm, such work convincing him that education might offer a better prospect than hoeing cotton. He attended East Texas Teacher's College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Education and Industrial Arts and later a master's degree in education. He graduated from East Texas State in 1933 in the midst of The Depression. He recalls coming home, hoeing cotton again when no teaching jobs were available and throwing his framed and useless diploma against the wall in disgust. He eventually got a job teaching in the Rattan one room schoolhouse for $30.00 a month. He later moved to Cooper, Texas where he taught shop, algebra and mechanical drawing, supplementing his teacher's salary by driving a school bus. During the summers when he worked as a service station attendant, he met his future wife, Maurine Chancellor, the recent salutatorian, who was cruising with her girlfriends. They married on September 13 after a romance that they recalled nostalgically as the summer of 1934. While they were in Cooper, Texas, two sons were born to them, Rex in 1935 and George in 1937. Ray's goal was to become a school administrator and he was rewarded with becoming junior high school principal in 1942 in Greenville, Texas. During the summers of 1942 and 1943 he worked as a foreman for German prisoners of war building a glider base and the Lake Texoma Dam in Ardmore and Tishomingo, Oklahoma. In 1944, when he realized the war was to be a long one, he volunteered for the US Navy and served for 2 years in the Pacific as a Lieutenant JG Armed Guard officer and chief naval officer aboard merchant ships transporting airplanes to the Pacific. After the war, the family moved to Athens, Texas where he became superintendent of schools for the next 28 years, becoming one of the longest-tenured superintendents in the state of Texas. Ray was raised in deep East Texas with the usual racial attitudes of the time. When the Supreme Court mandated school integration, he deftly guided the Athens Schools through the process with minimal conflict. The year before complete integration, he chose a group of African American girls to take a Spanish class at the white school purportedly because the class wasn't offered at their school. The girls finished at the top of their class, proving that they could be outstanding students. He personally drove the girls to school that semester to prove to the community that he endorsed and fully supported them. The African American school was closed the following year and all the students and their teachers were integrated into the formerly all-white school. He insisted, before affirmative action programs became popular, that African Americans be included in all school programs, from cheerleading to student council. His was the first East Texas school to completely integrate and to do so without conflict. He served in numerous civic capacities including: President of the Rotary Club, District Governor of the Texas/Oklahoma District of Rotary International, President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and President of the Lions Club. He was named Outstanding School Administrator, Best Teacher and was given numerous laurels during his teaching career. He resigned as superintendent in 1974 to devote time to farming and ranching interests in Athens and Lubbock and his growing family of grandchildren. Ray led a life of simplicity, industry, fidelity and integrity. He had numerous sayings and axioms that governed his life. Some include: Don't eat your seed corn. Don't proceed without a good plan. Work hard and keep on keeping on. Your family always comes first. There is no problem that alcohol won't make worse. Don't tell me, show me. Son, lots of people are smarter than you, but there is no one who should work harder than you. Treat women with respect. Save 20% of your gross income, give to your church, and live on the rest. Never argue, and always say "perhaps" when you offer an alternative view. You can learn more from your critics than your admirers. Think, son, think. When they retired, Ray and Maurine enjoyed traveling and spent many summers in Colorado and winters in Pharr, Texas. He was a founding member of Westoak Woods Baptist Church in Austin when it formed in 1990 and attended service regularly until illness intervened. Ray was an avid Cowboy and Longhorn fan and always held out hope that the Cowboys would rise again and the Longhorns would finally annihilate the Sooners. Among his dislikes were the New York Yankees, Ted Kennedy, Jane Fonda and the Oklahoma Sooners. Though in his early days he was a closet skeptic, he became a devoted Christian, largely through the teaching of his Sunday School teacher, the late Howard Dorris, who demonstrated for him what a Christian life was like. He was a respectful son, loving husband, devoted father and a generous and thoughtful grandfather. He embodied the virtues he sought to pass on to his devoted family. This giant of a man left an indelible mark on those who loved and knew him best. Survivors include his devoted wife of 71 years, Maurine; sons, Rex Lowe and wife Valerie of Plano, George Lowe and wife Nancy of Austin; six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Family visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., on Friday, January 13 at Harrell Funeral Home, 4435 Frontier Trail (South Lamar and Ben White). Burial will be on Saturday, January 14 at Cook-Walden Capital Park (14501 Interstate 35 in Pflugerville), preceded by a 10:00 am graveside service led by Rev. Scott McIntosh. A celebration of Ray's life, led by Rev. Logan Cummings, will be held at Westoak Woods Baptist Church, 2900 Slaughter Lane West, at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 14. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Russ Lowe, Lonnie Sherrell, Mike Middleton, Mark Tapley, Rob Johnson, Richard Rehme, Dave Cox, and Chris Miller. The family extends its special thanks to Michael Mayabb, MD, Scott Blois, MD, Stuart Damore, MD, and the staffs of Brighton Gardens and Odyssey Hospice for their compassionate and professional care of "Dandy" during the last years of his life.
