Marriage William Baker married Juda A. McKinney at NC.
1810 Census1810 William Baker was listed as head of a household on the 1810 U.S. census of Burke County, NC. Based on age and gender, his household could have included his wife Juda A. McKinney, his daughters Mary and Anna (Anny) (females under age 10). The identifications of the oldest daughters are not fixed in terms of birth order. Thus a daughter Elizabeth may have been enumerated on the 1810 census rather than one of these sisters.
1820 Census1820 William Baker was listed as head of a household on the 1820 U.S. census of Burke County, NC. Based on age and gender, his household could have included his wife Juda A. McKinney, his sons Thomas and Wilson (males under age 10), his daughters Elizabeth and Anna (Anny) (females under age 10), his daughter Mary (female age 10-16). The census reflects five daughters and only three have been identified. Moreover, the birth order of the daughters is not certain.
1830 Census1830 William Baker was listed as head of a household on the 1830 U.S. census census of Carter County, TN. Based on age and gender, his household could have included his wife Juda A. McKinney, his son David D. The census reflects four daughters; only three have been identified and the birth order is uncertain.
1840 Census1840 William Baker was listed as head of a household on the 1840 U.S.census of Carter County, TN. Based on age and gender, his household could have included his wife Juda A. McKinney, his son David D. (male age 15-20). The census reflects several unidentified persons -- two females aged 15-20, an adult male aged 40-50 and two boys aged 10-15.
1850 Census20 Nov 1850 William Baker and Juda A. McKinney appeared on the 1850 U.S. census of Carter County, TN, at 4th Civil District enumerated 20 Nov 1850. William was shown as a 63-year-old farmer, born NC; Juda as age 65, born NC. The census reflects that they were married in 1810/1811 (the document is not clear). Two grandchildren, Thomas J. Ervin, 8, born TN, and David J.N. Ervin, 4, born TN, were enumerated with them, as was 18-year-old Mary Garland, shown as born NC, whose relationship is not clear. Their grandchildren by their son Thomas were enumerated in household 17 (with their mother and her second husband); their son David and his family were enumerated in household 18.
1860 Census3 Jul 1860 William Baker and Juda A. McKinney appeared on the 1860 U.S. census of Division 2, Carter County, TN, enumerated 3 Jul 1860. William was shown as a 73-year-old farmer, born NC, with real estate valued at $13,000 and personalty valued at $20,550; Juda was shown as age 75, born NC. Their grandsons Thomas J. Birth27 Dec 1788 James Crittenden Baker, son of David Baker and Mary Webb, was born on 27 Dec 1788 at Burke County, NC. There are no known documented sources for the birth date of James Crittenden Baker. It is given as 27 Dec 1788 by both Elma Baker and by Pearl Foster O'Donnell, but without reliable source citations. It is offered here as theory only.
Name Variation  James Crittenden Baker was generally known as Crittenden.
1790 Census1790 Based on age and gender, James Crittenden Baker was probably included, as a free white male under age 16, in the household of his father, David Baker, on the 1790 U.S. census of Burke County, NC.
1800 Census1800 Based on age and gender, James Crittenden Baker was probably included as a free white male, under age 10, in the household of his father, David Baker, on the 1800 U.S. census of Burke County, NC. In fact, Crittenden was around age 12 at the time of this census.
Note

The available records provide powerful circumstantial evidence that one James C. Baker, who died in TN on 9 Oct 1865, was in fact James Crittenden Baker, son of David.

First, DNA testing of a documented descendant of James C. Baker is a 36/37 marker match with known sons of David Baker (and the one marker that's different is one that the DNA testing company describes as a frequently mutating marker); thus, the DNA is a very strong match.

Second, James C. Baker listed his birthplace as NC and his age as 66 on the 1850 Polk County TN census, and his birthplace as NC and his age as 75 on the 1860 Polk County census. On his tombstone his birth year was shown as 1786. That establishes that he was born c1784-1786 and certainly before 1790. There were only three Baker sons in North Carolina who had young sons in the 1790 NC census (David, John and Henry; Charles had only one daughter and James was unmarried and childless in 1790) and neither John nor Henry had a known son named James born before 1790.

Third, the 1840 Sevier County TN census listed Crittenden Baker just above the family of a David Baker who appears very likely to be the same David Baker listed just beneath James C. Baker on the 1850 Polk County census. David B. Baker, known to be James' son, had one son born 1840 (the 1840 census shows a son under age 5); he himself was in his 20s in 1840 (the census shows a man age 20-30); the David shown in 1850 had two adult women living in his household, and the same is true of the David on the 1840 census. The likelihood then is that both Bakers moved together from Sevier County to Polk County between 1840 and 1850, a strong indicator of a close family relationship.

Fourth, at least one child of the David Baker shown on the 1850 census was buried in Prospect Cemetery, McMinn County TN. That is the cemetery where James C. and Nancy Baker were buried. The chances that David was not James' son are essentially nil.

Finally, David B. Baker was the oldest known son of James C. Baker. Under the naming patterns of the time (and a pattern commonly used in the Baker family), a first-born son was often named for the father's father.

This strong circumstantial case warrants treatment of the following record information of James Crittenden Baker and James C. Baker as records of a single individual.

Assuming that this is true, then Thomas Baker (living next to David B. Baker in Sweetwater, Monroe County TN, in 1860) is also likely to be a son of James Crittenden Baker and grandson of David Baker. Also in Sweetwater, Monroe County, in 1860 is a James C. Baker whose age and birthplace on the 1860 census makes him a candidate to be yet another son.

Marriageb 1810 James Crittenden Baker married Nancy Jane Estes? b 1810.
1810 Census1810 James Crittenden Baker was listed as head of a household on the 1810 U.S. census of Burke County, NC. Crittenden Baker was shown in a household of two adults, one male, one female, both 16-25 years of age. Based on age and gender, his household could have included his wife Nancy Jane Baker. James, John and Reuben Webb, likely Crittenden's cousins on his mother's side, were enumerated on the same page of the census, as was Laban Estes, who may have been Crittenden's father in law.
1820 Census1820 James Crittenden Baker was listed as head of a household on the 1820 Census of Burke County, NC. The census suggests three sons and four daughters.
1830 Census1830 He was listed as head of a household on the 1830 Census of Burke County, NC. The census suggests six sons and six daughters. Based on age and gender, his household could have included his wife Nancy Jane Estes?

James was shown as a 66-year-old farmer, born NC; Nancy was shown as age 68, born NC. Their children Rachael, Leonard and Susannah were listed as living with them. All of the children -- Rachael, 27; Leonard, 21; and Susannah, 16 -- were shown as born NC. Also enumerated with the family was a 6-year-old boy, James Wilson, born NC. The relationship of the child to the family is as yet unknown. Enumerated next door on one side was Dorthy (Dolly) Barnett and on the other side was Lucinda Land, both identified by researchers as other Baker daughters.
1860 Census19 Jul 1860 James Crittenden Baker and Nancy Jane Baker appeared on the 1860 U.S. census of Polk County, TN, enumerated 19 Jul 1860. James was shown as age 75, born NC; Nancy was also shown as 75, born NC. Enumerated nearby was their son Leonard in household 715.

No one of a similar name appears on the 1870 census, though Susannah's son Solomon is on that census; the family with whom Susan Pitman was living in 1860 was in McDowell County in 1870 and no Susan Pitman was with them then. If this is our Susannah, then it thus appears that Susannah was alive at the time of the 1860 census (though age 65, not 55) but died before the 1870 census. That is only a tentative conclusion since a major portion of the 1870 Federal Census for Mitchell County is unavailable.
