Birthc 1794 Wilmoth Killen, daughter of William Killen and Nancy? [--M?--] Killen, was born c 1794 at NC. WORKING HYPOTHESIS: Wilmoth Killen Gentry was the daughter of William Killen Sr. and sister of William Jr. and Henry Killen. Gentry family history is consistent in identifying Wilmoth's maiden name as Killen; indeed, her first son was named Elijah Killen Gentry. In their history of her husband, Rev. Elijah Gentry, for the Rankin County Historical Society, Clarence Wilson and Maxine Wilson Smith (descendants of her son John Wesley Gentry) identified Wilmoth's father as a neighbor in Wayne County, MS. Family history reports that Wilmoth and Elijah married around 1817 in Wayne County.

The only Killen family in Wayne County around the time Elijah and Wilmoth married was that of William Killen, Sr. William Sr. and his son Henry were on the poll tax rolls of Wayne County in 1813 and 1815. William Sr. was on the 1816 Wayne County MS territorial census, and there were two adult females in his household.

Elijah Gentry and William Killen Jr. were on the same page (page 111) of the 1820 Wayne County census, one right after the other. Elijah Gentry's entry shows one female, aged 16-26. William Sr. was on the next page (page 112); his household then contained only one female, a woman more than 45 years old. (Henry is also reported by Ancestry.com to be on the same page as William Sr; it is hard to see that name if it is there.) Thus if Wilmoth was born around 1794-95 and married around 1817, she would have been 21-22 in 1816 and in her father's household, and 25-26 and in her husband's household in 1820.

In 1830, the Gentrys, William Sr., William Jr. and Henry were all on the Rankin County census. Indeed, William Sr. is reported to have died in Rankin County around 1834. Rankin County was divided into different counties by 1840; the Gentrys were in Winston County and Henry Killen in Neshoba County. (There was a William in Kemper County; family researchers indicate that was in fact William Jr., who was in Rusk County TX by 1850.) The 1850 census continues to show Henry Killen in Neshoba County and by then the Gentrys had moved to Neshoba County as well.

Several Killen family researchers (among them Harold B. Killen, Jim Hardy, Roy Traster and Tom Branning) have reported that family oral tradition puts the Killen family roots in Ulster, Ireland -- either directly (some say William himself was born there) or indirectly (Harold B. Killen's research suggests William was himself U.S.-born of Irish-American stock). Descendants of Wilmoth through her daughter Isabella also had the family tradition that they had only one Irish ancestor -- an Ulsterman from the North of Ireland. Harold Killen further reports that William's first four children, three sons and a daughter (he identifies the sons as William Jr., Henry, Jacob; the daughter, presumably, is Wilmoth), were born in North Carolina. The 1800 Richmond County NC census lists a "William Killin" with three sons under age 10 and one daughter under age 10. The 1850 Neshoba County census shows the birthplace for both Wilmoth Killen Gentry (shown as age 56) and Henry Killen (shown as age 58) as North Carolina; the birthplace of William Killen (Jr.) in the 1850 Rusk County TX census is also shown as NC. He was reported to be 50 years old in 1850.

Other clues arise from family names. Another of William Killen's sons, John Killen of Jasper County, MS, named a daughter Wilmoth. A grandson of William Killen, David Killen (son of Henry Killen), living in Neshoba County, named a son Elijah. And every known child of William Killen named a daughter Nancy (Henry Killen, William Killen Jr., John Killen, Benjamin Franklin Killen and Wilmoth Killen Gentry all had a daughter Nancy), which may well suggest that William Killen Sr.'s wife was named Nancy.

Putting all these facts together, it is clear that these Killens are Wilmoth's family: the lives of the Gentrys and the Killens overlapped and were intertwined to a degree that powerfully suggests kinship.1
Marriagec 1817 Wilmoth Killen married Elijah Gentry, son of Elijah Gentry Sr. and Hannah [--M?--] Gentry, c 1817 at prob Wayne County, MS. According to a document supplied by Harold B. Killen (descended from Benjamin Franklin Killen), the 1816 Wayne County MS census shows William Killen with two females in the household, both above the age of 21. In 1820, William Killen only had one female in his household, a woman more than 45 years of age. That would match precisely with Wilmoth's apparent birth date of 1794-95 and with her marriage at some point around 1817. Moreover, according to Rev. John Jones, 'A Complete History of Methodism as Connected with the Mississippi Conference,' 1887, vol I, page 427: 'Except the supposition that Alexander Fleming was a widower, the Mississippi Conference at this date [Oct 11, 1816], the Mississippi Conference at this date was exclusively a bachelor Conference.' So the marriage was after Oct 11, 1816 in any case.2
1820 Census1820 Wilmoth Killen Gentry was probably included as a free white female in the household of her husband, Elijah Gentry, on the 1820 Census of Wayne County, MS.3,4
1830 Census1830 Wilmoth Killen Gentry was probably included as a free white female in the household of her husband, Elijah Gentry, on the 1830 Census of Rankin County, MS.5
1840 Census1840 Wilmoth Killen Gentry was probably included as a free white female in the household of her husband, Elijah Gentry, on the 1840 Census of Winston County, MS. She was between 40 and 50, according to the census.6
1850 Census4 Aug 1850 Wilmoth Killen Gentry and Elijah Gentry appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Neshoba County, MS, enumerated 4 Aug 1850. Elijah was shown as a 63-year-old Methodist Episcopal minister, born GA. Wilmoth was shown as age 56, born NC. Their children William Jefferson and George Washington were listed as living with them. The children -- William, age 16, farmer, and George, age 14 -- were shown as born MS. Enumerated as a separate family in the same household were son John Wesley, a 27-year-old farmer born MS, his wife Amanda, age 21, born AL, and a three-year-old child William, also born AL. Note that John Wesley and Amanda were married in April 1850; this William may thus be a stepson given the Gentry last name or perhaps a child of John Wesley's by an earlier marriage. There is no record of this child after the 1850 census.7
1860 Census20 Sep 1860 Wilmoth Killen Gentry and Elijah Gentry appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Twp. 12, Range 10, Neshoba County, MS, enumerated 20 Sep 1860. Elijah was shown as a 71-year-old Methodist Episcopal clergyman, born GA; Wilmoth as a 68-year-old housekeeper, born NC. The families of several of their children were enumerated in nearby households: Elijah K. in household 995, Ira in household 987, John in household 985, William in household 986, and George in household 982..8
Note19 Dec 1868  Wilmoth executed a deed to sell land in Neshoba County on 19 Dec 1868 in which shewas identified as Elijah's widow.9
1870 Census23 Jun 1870 Wilmoth Killen Gentry appeared on the 1870 census of Neshoba County, MS, enumerated 23 Jun 1870 in the household of George Washington Gentry and Sina Cooksey Gentry, her son and daughter-in-law. She was shown as age 75, born NC.10
Deatha 23 Jun 1870 Wilmoth Killen Gentry died a 23 Jun 1870 at prob Neshoba County, MS. There is no record of Wilmoth Gentry after the 1870 census; she was not living with George or his family on the 1880 census.
