Thomas Baker
M, b. circa 1760
| Birth | c 1760 | Thomas Baker, son of William Baker and Ann Gambill, was born c 1760. Descendants of this Thomas Baker identify his birthplace as Wilkes County NC. If the date of c1760 is correct, that is most unlikely. As of 1763, William Baker (father of this Thomas) was still actively involved in land transactions in Culpeper County VA. |
| Note | | Thomas Baker's identity as the son of William Baker is established by a number of facts. First, William Baker (oldest son of Thomas and Dorothy Davenport Baker) was known to have married "a Gambill cousin," according to a statement made by William's brother Charles and recorded in the papers of Dr. John Branner of Stanford University (himself a descendant of Thomas and Dorothy Davenport Baker). Henry Gambill married Mary Davenport, sister of Dorothy Davenport Baker, and it was their daughter Ann (or Nancy) who married William Baker. Second, Thomas was deeply associated with Martin Gambill, younger brother of William Baker's wife, in Wilkes County. He was named as a "sister son" and "nephew" of Martin Gambill in affidavits submitted by Martin's widow, Nancy Nall Gambill, in support of bounty land and pension applications filed by Thomas' widow Molly Cantrell Baker. Thomas also appeared as a chain bearer for Martin Gambill in a survey for a land grant in an area that later became Ashe County.1,2 |
| Marriage | 20 Mar 1786 | Thomas Baker married Molly Cantrell on 20 Mar 1786 at Wilkes County, NC.3,2 |
