Family

The unexpected treat of my trip west in April 2004 was the chance to meet this pair of charmers: my second cousin Dick Moore (son of Ravia and Ivan Moore, grandson of Morris and Maud Cottrell Gottlieb) and his wife Julie. When I say we felt like we'd known each other all our lives, I'm not kidding. And right away we started planning a get-together in Virginia in the fall when Julie's high school class reunion was scheduled for Washington D.C. (As an Air Force brat, she went to high school in Japan. She and her classmates hold their reunions in various US cities. Great idea...)

For a while it seemed like October was never going to get here. But it did, and they did, and BOY did we have fun!

First, a tip of all of our hats -- big time -- to the host and hostess. My Uncle Mike (Michael Vance Cottrell, youngest son of Clay Rex and Opal Robertson Cottrell, nephew of Maud) and his wife Celeste graciously opened their home on short notice (we'd originally thought about a Northern Virginia get-together) and put out one heck of a spread. And I know that Linda Cottrell, wife of my Uncle Jerry (Jerry LaStone Cottrell, second youngest son of Clay, nephew of Maud), was also doing a lot of the work. Thanks, folks. Seriously. It was wonderful.

The older generation members there were first cousins to Dick's mother, Florence Ravia Gottlieb Moore. In addition to Mike and Jerry, they were Cladyne Cottrell Barrett (Clay's oldest daughter) and Patricia ("Trisha") Cottrell Williams (the youngest of all of Clay's and Opal's children, who never put down her own camera long enough to pose for a decent shot!!) and David Fred Cottrell (Clay's third son) with his wife Terry. [Added comment October 28th: David and Terry were kind enough to send the two best photos of Dick and Julie and, of course, the only one with me in it!]

There are three other members of that generation who couldn't (or, ahem, didn't) make it. My oldest uncle Billy Rex Cottrell wasn't feeling well, nor was my aunt Marianne Cottrell Epps. And my aunt Carol Cottrell Childress had visitors of her own. (We won't get into the fact that one of her visitors was my cousin Barbara Ann whom I haven't seen in a dog's age... Not that I was disappointed or annoyed or anything, oh no, not me...)
